Estimated percentage of the population covered by the data source in the catchment area

93% of population in twelve Spanish regions

Description of the population covered by the data source in the catchment area whose data are not collected (e.g., people who are registered only for private care)

BIFAP database covers twelve Spanish regions (out of 17) within the National Health System, representing nearly 50% of the total Spanish population (population size: 30 million/active: 24 million). Spain’s National Health System ensures universal access to healthcare through the Regional Healthcare Services, most of which contribute to BIFAP. PCPs, including general practitioners and paediatricians, play a central role as gatekeepers of the system. They coordinate patient care and facilitate exchange across different levels of care to guarantee continuity of care. Nearly the entire Spanish population (98.9%) is registered with a PCP, and the majority of drug prescriptions are issued at the primary care level.
