The Region of Valencia (East Spain) is one of the 17 Autonomous Communities of Spain, located in central and south-eastern Iberian Peninsula. The region is divided into three provinces (Alicante, Castellón and Valencia) and thirty-four counties. The largest city in the Region is its capital: Valencia.
The Valencia Region (Comunitat Valenciana) has 4.7 million inhabitants. The territory is divided into 24 geographical areas (“health departments”) with about 200,000 inhabitants each. The Health Department Valencia-La Fe is one of the health provision areas belonging to the Health Care System of the Region of Valencia (Spain). This Health Department covers a concrete geographical area located in the south area of the city of Valencia and coordinates all the healthcare services provided in the territory, from primary to tertiary care, covering 300,000 inhabitants directly and a catchment area adding up to 515,000 persons. The Department has a central management based in The University and Polytechnic La Fe Hospital of Valencia, the biggest reference hospital in the region and one of the most important centers in Spain.
The EHR of La Fe Hospital has access to data from both primary and specialized care, containing data from the clinical history of the patient and data from hospital admissions. In addition to these citizens, the hospital takes care of other patients from other departments who come here due to its reference activity, from other Autonomous Communities or passing foreigners. In these cases, the EHR includes data only from specialized care. It is important to mention that records from the Health Department Valencia-La Fe are the main source of routinely collected data.
