CUF, founded in 1945, is Portugal's leading private healthcare provider. The group currently operates 19 private hospitals and clinics, with over 11,472 employees, 724 beds, and 66 operating rooms. These facilities are spread throughout the country, covering a vast majority of the Portuguese population. In 2020 alone, CUF took care of 1 million patients, which included 2,3 million outpatient visits, 282,000 ER visits, 53,000 surgeries, +13,000 chemo, and +40,000 radiotherapy treatments. The group achieved a 0.64 risk-adjusted complication rate, 0.49 risk-adjusted admission rate, and 0.95 risk-adjusted mortality rate.
CUF's clinical data warehouse comprises electronic health records on over 3 million patients, with data collection starting in 2008. This data includes person demographics, visits (inpatient, outpatient, ER, home, telehealth), conditions and procedures (ICD, PT billing codes, and APR-DRG), drugs and devices (inpatient orders and administrations), measurements (laboratory tests, imaging exams, vital signs, glycemia levels measured at home), notes (unstructured clinical notes), specimens (biosamples), in-hospital deaths, and patient-level data coming from its active large-scale value-based healthcare program. This program collects disease-specific clinical outcomes reported by clinicians and patient-reported outcomes/experience measurements for 13 clinical conditions. Currently, the program follows more than 9,500 patients, making it the largest active outcomes collection program by a single organization in Portugal.
